Questions about vaping and teen oral health? Here are the key oral-health points from the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD).
🦷 What does vaping expose the mouth to?
E-cigarettes heat liquid into an aerosol. Its ingredients vary and may include nicotine, flavorings, and other chemicals. It is not simply water vapor.
🔎 What dental concerns have been reported?
- Gums and soft tissues: Studies reviewed by AAPD link e-cigarette use with reports of gum pain or bleeding and tongue or cheek pain.
- Teeth: Cracked or broken teeth have also been reported. These associations do not establish that vaping caused every problem.
- Cavities: AAPD describes the proposed connection with tooth decay as largely anecdotal; it is not a settled finding.
💡 Bring vaping into the dental conversation
AAPD encourages dental professionals to ask about vaping and explain its risks. Tell your teen’s dentist about use and ask about support for stopping.
Vaping belongs in an honest conversation about your teen’s oral health.
