Oral Piercings and Teen Teeth: Risks Worth Discussing

If your teen is considering a tongue or lip piercing, make dental risks part of the conversation. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) advises against oral piercings and oral jewelry because of possible harm.

🦷 How can oral jewelry affect teeth and gums?

  • Tooth damage: Jewelry can contribute to chipped, fractured or worn teeth.
  • Gum problems: Irritation, inflammation and gum recession have been reported.
  • Plaque buildup: Oral jewelry can retain plaque and increase cavity risk.

🔎 Which changes need attention?

Piercings can cause infection, bleeding and swelling. Watch for pain, tenderness or unusual, foul-smelling discharge.

Seek medical care if complications develop after a piercing. Severe swelling that affects breathing is an emergency.

💡 What should families discuss?

Tell the dentist about existing oral jewelry and any symptoms. Discuss tooth or gum changes and how jewelry may interfere with a sports mouthguard.
