Dental X-rays help us see what eyes alone can’t—so we can catch small problems early, guide growing smiles, and keep care simple and comfortable. With today’s digital technology, X-rays use very low radiation and are taken only when they’re truly helpful for your child.
Why your child might need X-rays
- Find cavities between teeth that aren’t visible during an exam
- Check roots and bone health after bumps, pain, or infection
- Monitor tooth eruption and jaw growth
- Plan orthodontic care and track developing teeth
- Follow up on past treatment or areas we’re watching
Types of pediatric dental X-rays
- Bitewing: Looks between the back teeth to spot early cavities
- Periapical: Shows one or two teeth from crown to root to evaluate infections, trauma, or deep decay
- Panoramic: A broad picture of all teeth and jaws—helpful for growth, missing/extra teeth, and orthodontic planning
- Cephalometric (ortho side-view): Assesses jaw position and growth for braces planning
- CBCT (3D scan): Used sparingly for complex cases when detailed 3D information is needed
Safety first, always
- Ultra-low dose: Modern digital X-rays use minimal radiation—often comparable to the exposure from everyday life over a short period.
- ALARA principle: We keep radiation As Low As Reasonably Achievable and take X-rays only when they benefit diagnosis or treatment.
- Tailored to your child: Frequency depends on age, cavity risk, dental history, and symptoms. For many kids, check-up X-rays range from every 6 to 24 months; panoramic or orthodontic films are timed to key growth stages.
- Protection and precision: We use focused beams and shielding (such as a thyroid collar) when appropriate to limit exposure.
What your child can expect
- Quick and comfortable: A small sensor or camera is placed gently in the mouth (or the machine takes an external picture), and it’s done in seconds.
- Kid-friendly coaching: We show and tell each step, use smaller sensors when needed, and keep visits positive and calm.
- Same-visit answers: Images appear instantly so we can review them with you and make a clear plan.
Common questions
- Are X-rays safe for kids? Yes. The dose is very low, and the health benefits of finding issues early far outweigh the minimal risk. We never take X-rays “just because.”
- Do X-rays hurt? No. Your child might feel a little pressure from the sensor, but it shouldn’t be painful.
- How often will my child need them? It varies. We base the schedule on your child’s risk for cavities, growth and development, and any symptoms.
