🦷 What is an interim therapeutic restoration?
ITR is a provisional restoration used to help control tooth decay when standard restorative treatment needs to wait. It belongs within a broader dental treatment plan.

A dentist may consider ITR when:
- Cooperation is still developing: A young child needs more time to become comfortable with treatment.
- Conventional care is not currently feasible: An interim approach can help manage decay while definitive care is arranged.
- Several cavities need attention: Decay control may be one stage of a larger treatment plan.
🔎 What does the dentist do?

💡 Why does follow-up matter?
AAPD’s minimally invasive dentistry policy emphasizes that a restoration alone does not stop the underlying decay process. Continued care addresses the factors that allowed cavities to develop.
- Home care: Follow individualized brushing and fluoride-toothpaste guidance.
- Food and drinks: Discuss how often your child consumes carbohydrates and which changes are practical for your family.
- Professional reviews: Keep the follow-up schedule so the dentist can monitor decay, the restoration, and any need for further treatment.
Remember: Minimally invasive care still requires active monitoring. Pain or signs of infection need assessment; a temporary restoration is not a reason to postpone contacting the dentist.
