Before your toddler has dental treatment, you should understand the plan and have time to ask questions. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) describes informed consent as a conversation that supports an informed decision.
🦷 What should the dentist explain?
Use these questions to discuss your toddler’s care:
- The problem: What dental condition needs attention?
- The recommendation: What would the treatment involve, and what is its purpose?
- Benefits and risks: What are the expected benefits and possible complications?
- Other choices: What alternatives are appropriate, and what are their risks?
- No treatment: What could happen if the condition is left untreated?
💡 What if an explanation is unclear?
Ask the dentist to explain unfamiliar terms. Discuss professional interpretation if language is a barrier. AAPD emphasizes checking understanding before consent is given.
A signed form documents the consent process; it does not replace the discussion.
💬 What if the treatment plan changes?
Ask how changes would be explained and how consent would be updated. Different procedures have different risks.
