Your Toddler’s Dental Treatment Plan: Questions Before Consent

Before your toddler has dental treatment, you should understand the plan and have time to ask questions. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) describes informed consent as a conversation that supports an informed decision.

🦷 What should the dentist explain?

Use these questions to discuss your toddler’s care:

  • The problem: What dental condition needs attention?
  • The recommendation: What would the treatment involve, and what is its purpose?
  • Benefits and risks: What are the expected benefits and possible complications?
  • Other choices: What alternatives are appropriate, and what are their risks?
  • No treatment: What could happen if the condition is left untreated?

💡 What if an explanation is unclear?

Ask the dentist to explain unfamiliar terms. Discuss professional interpretation if language is a barrier. AAPD emphasizes checking understanding before consent is given.

A signed form documents the consent process; it does not replace the discussion.

💬 What if the treatment plan changes?

Ask how changes would be explained and how consent would be updated. Different procedures have different risks.
