Born With a Tooth: Questions for Your Baby’s Dentist

A tooth in your newborn’s mouth can be a surprise. AAPD explains that these early teeth are usually part of the normal set of baby teeth. Your baby’s dentist can assess whether one needs attention.

👶 What are natal and neonatal teeth?

  • Natal teeth: Present when a baby is born.
  • Neonatal teeth: Appear during the first month.

🦷 Does an early tooth need removal?

Not automatically. A tooth may remain if it does not disrupt feeding or mouth function and there is no risk of it loosening and being inhaled.

💡 What should parents discuss?

  • Feeding: Discomfort for the baby or nipple pain during breastfeeding.
  • The tongue: A sore, bleeding or irritation where it rubs against the tooth.
  • Looseness: Whether the tooth could detach.

Depending on the findings, the dentist may recommend smoothing an edge or removing the tooth.

Treatment decisions should follow an individual assessment and a discussion of the risks for the baby and mother.
