Can Baby Molars Benefit From Dental Sealants?
Wondering whether sealants are only for older children? Baby molars can be considered too. Here are questions to discuss at your toddler’s dental visit.
🦷 Where can sealants help?
The joint American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) and American Dental Association guideline recommends sealants for chewing surfaces of baby and permanent molars that are healthy or have early decay without a hole in the surface.
Sealing these grooves can help prevent decay or slow progression of an early lesion. The guideline also calls for more research specifically in baby teeth.
💡 Why does the tooth need assessment?
The dentist must determine whether the surface fits those conditions and consider your child’s individual needs. Sealant selection also depends on placement conditions, including whether the tooth can be kept dry.
A sealant recommendation should fit the particular tooth and child.
👶 What should parents ask?
- Suitability: Why is a sealant appropriate for this baby molar?
- Follow-up: When will you check whether it remains in place?
- Prevention: What other preventive care should continue?
