Tongue-Tie in Babies: Why Individual Assessment Matters

Questions about tongue-tie in babies can leave parents unsure about the next step. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends considering each baby’s needs.

👶 What is tongue-tie?

Tongue-tie, or ankyloglossia, involves a restrictive attachment beneath the tongue that limits movement. Appearance alone does not reliably show how well the tongue functions.

🦷 Does a feeding problem mean tongue-tie?

No. AAPD notes that other causes of breastfeeding difficulty are more common. An assessment can consider tongue movement, feeding concerns, and other possible explanations, with input from appropriate health professionals.

💡 Is a procedure always needed?

Some infants may benefit from a tongue-tie release, but not every baby needs surgery. Evidence about the best timing and long-term outcomes remains limited.

A treatment decision should reflect your baby’s function and symptoms, not simply a label.

💬 Questions to bring to an assessment

  • Function: What movement restriction is affecting my baby?
  • Other causes: What else could explain the feeding difficulty?
  • Options: What are the benefits, risks, and alternatives, including no procedure?
