First Dental Visit Prep: Games and Stories for 6–12 Month-Olds

Your baby’s first dental visit is a milestone worth celebrating – not stressing over! At Little Kids Dentistry, we believe that happy first visits create confident dental patients for life.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that every child sees a dentist by age 1 (or within 6 months of the first tooth). This quick, fun check-up lets us count teeth, check for early decay, and give you personalized tips – while your little one plays.

This guide is packed with simple games, books, and pretend-play ideas to turn the dentist into a friend before you even walk through our doors.

Why the First Visit Happens So Early (Age 1)

The primary goal of the first visit is proactive care and education for parents:

  • Catch tiny problems before they become big ones.

  • Coat new teeth with fluoride varnish (tastes like candy!).

  • Help parents master brushing and feeding habits.

  • Make dentistry feel normal and safe from the start.

Most babies leave giggling with a new toothbrush and a balloon – no tears required.

🧸 6 Easy Games & Activities for Baby First Dental Visit Prep

Start these simple, fun activities 1–2 weeks before the appointment to build familiarity and confidence:

  1. “Open Wide” Mirror Game

Hold your baby in front of a mirror. Say “AHHHH” and open your mouth wide, then gently touch their lips and say “Your turn!” Reward every little mouth-opening with claps and smiles.

  2. Toothbrush Tickles

Let your baby hold and chew on their soft infant toothbrush daily. Turn brushing into a silly song: “This is the way we tickle the teeth, tickle the teeth, tickle the teeth…”

  3. Dentist Puppet Play

Use a favorite stuffed animal as the “patient.” Put on a white shirt or paper mask and pretend to “count” the animal’s teeth with a clean finger or spoon. Let baby take a turn being the dentist.

  4. Ride the “Dental Chair”

Practice reclining on the couch or in your lap while singing a song. Gently tip baby back for 10–15 seconds (the exact position we use) and praise them: “You’re riding the magic chair!”

  5. Flashlight Fun

Shine a small flashlight (or phone light) into your own mouth and say “The dentist uses a tiny flashlight to see sparkly teeth!” Let baby hold the light and explore your open mouth safely.

  6. Countdown Calendar

For 9–12 month-olds who understand simple routines, make a 3- or 5-day picture chart with a smiley tooth sticker each morning. When all stickers are placed, it’s “Dentist Day – yay!”

📚 5 Perfect Books & Videos for Babies 6–12 Months

Repetition and familiarity are key for baby first dental visit prep. Incorporate these media into your routine:

  • The Tooth Book by Dr. Seuss (Bright Starts edition) – Great for big pictures and simple rhymes.

  • Brush, Brush, Brush! (Rookie Toddler board book) – Shows real babies brushing.

  • Peppa Pig: Dentist Trip – Short, cheerful YouTube read-aloud versions.

  • Baby’s First Dental Visit by Daniel Tiger (free episode on PBS Kids).

  • Our own Little Kids Dentistry “Meet Dr. Natalya” video (link sent with appointment reminders!).

Tip: Read the book while doing the mirror game—babies love repetition!

What Actually Happens at the Visit

Knowing the simple process can help you narrate the experience and manage your own stress.

  1. You hold baby in your lap (knee-to-knee with Dr. Natalya) for comfort.

  2. We count teeth and check gums with a tiny mirror (sometimes called a “tooth mirror”).

  3. A quick application of fluoride varnish (takes 20 seconds, tastes like vanilla or bubblegum).

  4. You get a free toothbrush, toothpaste sample, and a photo of baby’s first visit.

  5. We answer all your questions—no rush!

Total time for the check-up is usually 10–15 minutes.

🎒 Packing Your Diaper-Bag “Happy Visit Kit”

Pack for comfort and distraction. We provide everything else (toys, books, balloons!):

  • Favorite small toy or teether

  • Pacifier (if they use one)

  • A clean lovey or blanket for comfort

  • Diaper/change of clothes (just in case)

  • Any questions written on your phone
