Dental Visits During Teen Pregnancy: Planning Care
If your teen is pregnant, questions about dental visits are understandable. A conversation with the dental team can help your family plan care.
🦷 Should routine visits continue?
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) encourages dental visits during pregnancy. Examinations and preventive care remain important. Pregnancy can affect the gums and other tissues in the mouth.
📋 How is treatment planned?
- Individual assessment: Health history and examination findings guide the plan.
- Timing: The second trimester is generally preferred for needed, non-urgent restorative and periodontal treatment. Elective procedures can wait until after delivery.
- Medicines and anesthesia: The dentist weighs benefits and risks; consultation with the prenatal medical provider may be needed.
💡 What should families ask?
Ask which care is needed now, how visits can be made comfortable, and whether the dental and prenatal teams should coordinate.
Pregnancy is not a reason to wait out dental pain or infection. Contact a dentist promptly for assessment and treatment.
