Wondering about your role during toddler dental visits? The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) encourages decisions that reflect the child’s needs and the family’s preferences.
👶 Start with your toddler’s needs
Communication should suit a child’s age, understanding, health, and cultural background. Share previous dental experiences and concerns with the dentist so these can inform the visit.
🦷 Should I stay in the treatment room?
There is no single answer for every family. AAPD recommends a shared decision that considers the child’s temperament, anxiety, health, previous experiences, and planned treatment.
Research suggests that a parent’s presence alone may offer little or no improvement in anxiety or cooperation. The evidence is very uncertain; this does not mean your involvement is unimportant.
Keep expectations flexible: AAPD’s recommendations are conditional. Different children may benefit from different approaches.
💬 Questions to discuss with the dental team
- Your role: How can I take part in today’s visit?
- Communication: How will you explain treatment at my toddler’s level?
- Choices: What are the benefits and drawbacks of my staying in the room?
